Buffalo Bills: 53-man roster prediction after second round of cuts

Safety (4)

Starter: Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer

Backup: Jaquan Johnson, Damar Hamlin

Cut: Josh Thomas

With Tariq Thompson, the victim of the second round of cuts the Bills backup safety competition is down to three names. I think that right now Jaquan Johnson and Damar Hamlin are leading and have shown they are capable of being NFL backups. However, Josh Thomas has flashed as well so this battle certainly is not over and is very open.

Johnson has a slight edge with the most experience of the bunch but rookie 6th round draft pick Damar Hamlin has looked the best in the preseason so far showing a variety of skills throughout his first two games.

Josh Thomas has also shown he not only hang with these guys in a competition but some serious NFL competition as well. Outside of defensive tackle, this would be the position I am most unsure about. We can only read so much watching training camp to a preseason game where a competition like this will could come down to things that are hard to measure like character, hustle, and versatility.

Special Teams (3)

Starter: Tyler Bass (K), Matt Haack (P), Reid Ferguson (LS)

Just like all of camp, these three are locked into their positions. This is the only group that I can guarantee I will have correct. Bass has been lights out this preseason and Ferguson has always been lights out as a Buffalo Bill.

Matt Haack had a rough second preseason game after a fantastic first one. He is a different style of punter than the last man in Buffalo Corey Bojorquez but for the moment he is here to stay.
