Buffalo Bills: Picking the winners in key position battles from Bears game
Backup Safety
With no Jaquan Johnson against the Bears Damar Hamlin and Josh Thomas, both had plenty of opportunities to showcase their best to be included in the 53-man roster. Damar Hamlin won this battle fair and square. While Thomas played well and certainly should have no reason to be disappointed in his performance Hamlin was making plays all over the field. Hamlin had four tackles, one TFL, and one QB hit, one fumble recovery. Hamlin offers a slightly more unique skillset than Thomas or Johnson as he is a better blitzer and can be moved into the box as a very undersized linebacker.
While Hamlin won the battle this week I still think both of these guys need to prove something next week against the Packers to get on the roster. Right now I will give the edge to Hamlin but remember that Thomas has an extra year in Buffalo’s system and the ability to contribute on special teams will be a big factor in making the team.
Right now I would have Jaquan Johnson as the guy who leads for the third safety spot because of his contribution in the past. Behind him, I would slightly put Hamlin over Thomas for the fourth safety spot.
The Buffalo Bills invested a draft pick in Hamlin and that may also push him over Thomas for the last spot. However, I would be surprised if Buffalo did not try to keep Thomas on the practice squad just like they did last season
