The return of the fullback

Before the start of training camp, the Buffalo Bills changed Reggie Gilliam’s position on the roster from tight end to fullback. At the time, it didn’t seem like it was noteworthy but if the offensive gameplan is any indication, the fullback position could be returning.

In 2018 and 2019, the Bills had fullback Patrick DiMarco and while it wasn’t a lot of snaps he was on the field for 16% of the offensive snaps each season. However, the Bills released DiMarco prior to the season and didn’t have a fullback listed on the roster.

In the game against the Bears, Gilliam got two goal line carries which he converted for touchdowns. This is noteworthy because this is a role that Zack Moss was thought to be filling alongside Josh Allen but Gilliam may be getting some of that work as well.

The return of the fullback could also be a way to try and help the run game as the starting offensive line excels in pass protection but is not as strong in run blocking. If the game against the Chicago Bears is any indication, Reggie Gilliam’s role in this offense could grow this season.
