Backup Defensive End

This position battle is less for a roster spot than the other positions listed but more for a snap count and playing time reason. It is no secret that Jerry Hughes, Mario Addison, AJ Epenesa, and Greg Rousseau, and Boogie Basham are all going to be on the roster. They could be joined by names such as Efe Obada and Darryl Johnson and that is a slight battle in itself. However, the real battle here is how Buffalo will split up the snaps and playtime of these guys.

Epenesa has been picked by many to be a breakout player after a disappointing first season. Rousseau has surprised many in camp and had a fantastic debut against the Lions recording his first NFL sack. While Hughes and Addison are trusted vets who have both received praise this season. Rousseau and Epenesa are the clear backups but their playtime is unclear. Both could be pushed and lose snaps to guys like Basham, Obada, or Johnson. They also could push Hughes and Addison and even take some of those snaps.

This is an interesting battle to watch against the Bears because we will likely see a lot of Justin Fields who is a very mobile quarterback. If Buffalo’s ends could shine against an elite athlete like Fields they could earn some more playtime because after all, Buffalo is chasing the Chiefs who have an uber-athletic quarterback themselves. This battle is not just something to watch against the Bears but could be something that develops all season long.
