Buffalo Bills: 53-man roster prediction before second preseason game
Safety (4)
Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer, Jaquan Johnson, Josh Thomas
Cut: Damar Hamlin, Tariq Thompson
The safety position will be a fun one to watch the rest of the preseason. Poyer and Hyde are one of the best safety duos in all of football and look to continue their consistent run of play. Johnson was not a lock for the first backup safety role but he has excelled in the preseason both this year and his rookie year and is a huge special teams contributor. Johnson should not be considered safe yet but is pretty darn close after a strong camp and game against the Lions.
The last spot is Thomas’ at the moment. He slightly outplayed Damar Hamlin against the Lions and has an extra year in the system compared to both Hamlin and Thompson who are rookies. Buffalo is high on Thomas and the extra year he has is an advantage over the two rookies.
Although the young safeties have played well over the course of camp and the preseason this is Buffalo’s weakest depth on the roster. At almost all the other positions they have guys who could fill in and at least be league average. At safety, the youth and inexperience is something Buffalo may gamble on. I would expect Brandon Beane to take a good look at options around the league to potentially bring in some more reliable and proven depth at safety.

Special Teams (3)
Tyler Bass (K), Matt Haack (P), Reid Ferguson (LS)
The only position with no potential question marks or controversy. The Buffalo Bills brought in no competition for these three and they all performed exceptionally against the Lions. Buffalo drafted Bass last season and it looks like his big leg has become quite the asset for Buffalo.
