Taron Johnson

Years left on current contract: 1 year

The nickel position is a critical role in Sean McDermott’s defense and for the better part of three seasons, Taron Johnson has been the primary player to fill this role. While Johnson hasn’t always been consistent, the good has certainly outweighed the bad.

This past season as an example, Johnson started the year as the starter but midway through the season was benched and replaced by Cam Lewis. However, Lewis suffered a season-ending injury and Johnson returned to his spot in this defense.

In the second half of the season last year, Johnson played great and made a number of big plays, like a pick-six against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday Night Football as well as a 101-yard interception return for a touchdown in the Divisional Round against the Baltimore Ravens.

While an extension for Taron Johnson may be risky considering his inconsistencies, in my opinion, he has shown enough to warrant a two or three-year extension past this season.
