Buffalo Bills: 5 players next in line for contract extensions
Jerry Hughes
Years left on current contract: 1 year
The defensive end position could look very different this time next year with Jerry Hughes, Mario Addison, and Efe Obada all under contract through the 2021 season. While Greg Rousseau, Carlos Basham Jr., and A.J. Epenesa are the future at the position, it isn’t necessarily a bad idea to have a veteran presence at the position to guide this young group.
That is why the idea of extending Jerry Hughes now isn’t necessarily a bad idea. Hughes is the longest-tenured player currently on the Buffalo Bills roster after they acquired him in a trade in 2007. He is one of the leaders of this defense and while the sack totals are down, he still is able to get pressure on the quarterback with only 16 sacks over the past three years but 38 QB hits.
If the Bills were to extend Hughes, it likely wouldn’t be for more than a year or two, but knowing that Jerry Hughes will be under contract past this season would certainly be a positive.
