The Entire Special Teams Unit

I thought about including some other players here such as Isaiah Hodgins, Harrison Phillips, or Levi Wallace here but the person or group with the most potential to be an unsung hero really is the special teams unit.

The reason is simple, special teams can easily win or lose any game for a team. We saw it so often last season with other teams. Buffalo has a new punter in Matt Haack and he is quite literally the opposite of Corey Bojorquez who has held the position for the past couple of years. Bojorquez was a big leg who did not have very good control of that leg. Haack is a more precision punter who will pin you inside the twenty instead of flipping the field.

At kicker, Buffalo sticks with Tyler Bass who quietly put together one of the best kicking seasons in the Bills history. With a massive leg, Bass certainly extends the range of Buffalo’s field goal attempts and also is able to create touchbacks on kickoffs.

While they could be unsung heroes this unit also has the pressure of being the opposite. For example, look at Cody Parkey the famed “double-doink” kicker. His NFL career was thrown off track and received an abnormal amount of media attention based on one play. That is the type of stakes this group could be forced to perform under.

So why could these guys be unsung hero’s? It is not because they are just specialists it is because they are a darn good group of specialists. Long snapper Reid Ferguson has to be mentioned as well. Without a botched snap the past three seasons he is one of the best snappers in the league. Not to mention a fan favorite amongst fans.

Bass and Haack will each have some major moments this season. Whether is a chance to kick a game-winning field goal from 50+ yards or to pin teams down inside their own twenty-yard line in key game situations both players will have to make the most of those opportunities. If they do? They alone could be the deciding factor in games.

Buffalo looks to improve on last year and they will be a target for teams that want to win over a contender. Buffalo will also have very close games with some other major contenders on the schedule such as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers or Kansas City Chiefs. Bass and Haack could be key in those games and their performances can often change the course of games.
