Defensive Backs Coach: John Butler

Another coach who spent significant time in the college ranks John Butler. Butler was hired in 2018 by McDermott after a three-year stint with the Houston Texans. Butler has coached a really solid Buffalo group of defensive backs, making a quick Impact.

At cornerback, Butler has not only helped Tre’Davious White become an All-Pro in the NFL but also has coached undrafted free agent Levi Wallace to 35 starts in his first three seasons as a pro. Add that on top of one of the best safety duos in the NFL and Johnson-and all signs would point to John Butler being a darn good coach.

Although he does not have a ton of NFL experience Butler has received praise from almost everyone he has worked with. Former Pro Bowl cornerback Jonathan Joseph had to say this about Butler:

Butler is a very important part of what Buffalo does in the secondary. While Butler has been solid throughout his time in Buffalo, the secondary did take a slight step back last season. 2021 is a big year for Butler, considering that Buffalo has not really added anyone in the secondary.

The path to better play is through developing the players already in-house. While Butler has done a great job so far players such as younger players (not named Tre’Davious White), that’s exactly what they are.

All of them are young and talented but far from the level of star Tre’Davious White. While none of them have to be as good as White this season, if Butler can coach them to be above-average, the Buffalo Bills will improve on their passing defense ranks from last season.
