Buffalo Bills reportedly setting up workout with QB Zach Smith
Even though the quarterback position may be the best position group on the Buffalo Bills, this is not stopping the organization to continue to look for talent. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Bills are scheduling a workout with former Tulsa quarterback Zach Smith
Smith started his collegiate career at the University of Baylor and played two seasons there in 2016 and 2017. He would play in 19 games over that stretch with 2,997 passing yards with 21 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.
He would then transfer to the University of Tulsa and play two seasons there as well in 2019 and 2020. Smith would play in 21 games over those two seasons and had 5,226 passing yards with 32 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.
When reading the scouting report on The Draft Network there are a number of similarities to quarterback Josh Allen.
"Smith’s best qualities are his size, arm strength, and toughness. He has the build of an NFL quarterback and has the arm strength to challenge tight windows and push the ball down the field. He’s a tough football player that has taken his share of hits but keeps battling and has played through injuries. With that said, Smith’s performance on the field has been erratic. He struggles with accuracy, handling pressure, decision-making, and he has a troubling amount of interceptions and fumbles under his belt."
They describe a quarterback who has a big arm, great size (6’3″ and 227 pounds) but struggles with accuracy. This is very similar to how Josh Allen was described and the Buffalo Bills could be looking at Smith to be a developmental quarterback over the next few seasons.
However, this is not to say that Smith is not the Josh Allen and the biggest difference between the two is that Smith is not as mobile as Allen. He had only had one rushing touchdown in the four seasons in college.
The question is where would Zach Smith fit within the roster and training camp. The Buffalo Bills already have four quarterbacks on the roster with Allen, Mitchell Trubisky, Jake Fromm and Davis Webb.
Most teams do not bring in more than four quarterbacks and practice snaps, as well as preseason snaps, are sometimes had to come by with five quarterbacks to truly evaluate the depth. The fact they are bringing him in for a workout could just be that they are doing their due diligence and could sign him down the road if an injury occurred at the position this offseason.
