Recap

While Brandon Beane has not found a star player such as James Robinson, David Andrews, or plenty of other NFL stars in the undrafted free-agent market he should not be expected to. Finding undrafted free agents with Pro Bowl potential is one of the most difficult things to do as a general manager.

The undrafted free agent market is a group of players that every single team decided to not draft several times for reasons individual to each player. Beane is doing exactly what he should be doing in the undrafted free agent market. Beane finds players who need developing and stashes them on the practice squad until either they develop to make the roster or they get replaced by someone better.

In the undrafted free agent market, Beane has found two players capable of being starters in the NFL and six players who have shown flashes on the 53-man roster at some point in their career so far. Every year Beane has an undrafted free agent or two that make at least some kind of impact in year one. That kind of consistency and ability to use that market to the advantage of the franchise is one of the reasons that Buffalo’s team is built so well.

Could Beane do better? Sure, Beane still has yet to find a true diamond in the rough in the undrafted free agent market. However, Beane is doing more than enough considering some of the undrafted free agents he has brought in are in prime position to make a roster that is contending for a Super Bowl in 2021.
