The Buffalo Bills were back on the clock in the second round and with the 61st pick, they selected Wake Forest’s, Carlos ‘Boogie’ Basham Jr.

During his time as a Deamon Deacon, the Roanoke, VA., native led the nation in consecutive tackles-for-a loss with 23-straight games only coming to an end against Syracuse. Basham finished the season with 28 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and five sacks. Basham’s efforts in his 2020 redshirt season saw him be named to the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List, the Lott Impact Trophy Watch List and was Senior Class Award Candidate.

While Basham brings more defensive talent to the Bills roster, his selection is one that leaves Bills’ fans scratching their heads.

Having selected defensive ends in back-to-back rounds, many can’t help but wonder why the team selected Gregory Rousseau in the first round. With players who could have made an immediate help in other positions such as running back, cornerback, or even a different edge talent, the selection births more questions rather than answers.

Basham’s selection also makes the third edge talent that has been selected in just two years. With the Bills still trying to find out what they have with A.J. Epenesa and now Gregory Rousseau, there may be limited reps to go around for the young hopefuls.

While the back-to-back defensive end selections sure up the position for, hopefully, the long haul, the Bills could have used help elsewhere.

With Oklahoma’s Creed Humphy available at the time of Buffalo’s selection, drafting Mitch Morse’s heir-apparent could have been a more fruitful pick. With Morse having documented battles with concussions and injuries through his career, pairing Josh Allen with a younger center in hopes they develop a strong bond could have been more beneficial.

Additonally, Buffalo could have opted to bolster their struggling tight end room with the selection of Miami’s Brevin Jordan. With Dawson Knox struggling to make that next step, Jordan’s proven resume as a pass-catcher would have added another weapon to the Bills’ offense in hopes of getting past the Kansas City Cheifs.
