Buffalo Bills: Predicting roles for the reserve/future contract signings
QB Davis Webb
Davis Webb could be the most interesting man on this list. Webb has a very unique role on the Buffalo Bills that is much more important than a casual fan would think. From helping Stefon Diggs learn the playbook after Diggs was acquired via trade from the Minnesota Vikings the last offseason, playing scout team safety, and even offering scouting reports to different position groups about their opponents Webb is a big piece of the Bills success.
A former New York Giants third round draft pick out of Texas Tech, Webb is still looking for his first regular-season snap. Barring an absurd injury plague in the Bills quarterback room Webb will likely not get that first snap in Buffalo. Webb’s value off the field is enough to make Buffalo keep him around and it would be shocking to not see Webb a part of the 2021 Buffalo Bills in some capacity.
Projection: Practice Squad
RB Antonio Williams
A Bills Mafia fan-favorite Antonio Williams got his chance to shine in Week 17 against the Miami Dolphins where he ran for 63 yards on 12 carries scoring two touchdowns. What was a memorable day for the undrafted free agent out of North Carolina turned into Buffalo Bills fans calling for him to play the following week in the wildcard round against the Indianapolis Colts.
While that was a dream of some Bills fans it was unrealistic for Williams to receive any playing time in the playoffs. That does not mean Williams lacks potential. In his showing against Miami, he ran physically and could not be tackled easily.
Williams style was the type of running that Buffalo fans were eager to see leading to Williams becoming a fan favorite. Williams has an uphill climb to make the 2021 roster with the Bills adding Matt Breida and potentially in the mix to draft a running back.
Projection: Practice Squad
RB Christian Wade
Christian Wade just like Williams is a fan favorite. One of the biggest disappointments about the lack of preseason last year was not being able to see Christian Wade with the ball in his hands.
A former Rugby star, Wade came to the Buffalo Bills in 2019 as part of the International Player Pathway Program. Every Bills fan remembers those two massive runs that Wade had in the 2019 preseason and while he was not necessarily close to making the roster than after two years of practicing with Buffalo it’s hard to rule out Wade.
Luckily for Wade, the International Player Pathway Program was extended a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and he will able to be a roster exemption this season meaning he is essentially a lock for the practice squad. Wade’s real test comes next season when he no longer has a roster exemption and will have to make the team or be cut.
