Round 2

The next pick in this mock draft is an original 2nd round pick of the Buffalo Bills sitting at 61st overall. After the Bills met with Melifonwu at the Reese’s Senior Bowl, it’s tough not to mock draft him to the Bills.

Yes, the Buffalo Bills did re-sign Levi Wallace recently, but the CB2 position is currently up for grabs between him and last year’s 7th round pick Dane Jackson. However, similar to the discussion about the tight end competition, iron sharpens iron. If the Bills can draft Melifonwu, he should instantly be thrown in the mix to compete with Levi Wallace and Dane Jackson for the CB2 spot opposite Tre’Davious White.

At 6’3″ and almost 215 pounds, Melifonwu is a big bodied cornerback similar to the mold of veteran Richard Sherman, who many predicted would sign with the Bills this offseason. The way Melifonwu has measured and tested during this predraft process has bolstered his draft stock and the Bills would be lucky to see him fall to them in the 2nd round.

Melifonwu’s mix of length and athleticism makes him a very good fit in Sean McDermott’s zone coverage heavy defense. That length allows him to recover more easily and disrupt wide receivers at the catch point. In 3 years playing at Syracuse, Melifonwu played a total of 842 coverage snaps in which he recorded 19 passes defended and 3 interceptions. In addition to his coverage skills, Melifonwu has the size and willingness to help in run support from the cornerback position.
