A deal that was literally years in the making, Dak Prescott finally signed a 4-year $160 million contract last week and could have serious implications on the Buffalo Bills negotiation with Josh Allen.  Not only will Prescott be making the second highest amount per year behind Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, but Prescott will be earning $126 million fully guaranteed.

To the novice fan, this contact means a lot of money to a well-deserved player.  To anyone in western New York, this contract has significant promise, or ramifications, on future negotiations between the Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen.

It is no secret the Bills need to resign Josh Allen to a long-term contract to keep their franchise quarterback in Buffalo for years to come.  That said, it will come at a hefty price.  Brandon Beane has already indicated that negotiations would probably be tabled into later this offseason.  Moreover, the Bills would like to avoid picking up a fifth-year option, which would cost them over $23 million during the 2022 season and lead to the inability to be flexible with a shrinking salary cap.

So, where does this leave us?  According to Spotrac, Josh Allen’s market value based on the contacts of Patrick Mahomes, Deshaun Watson, Dak Prescott, plus Carson Wentz, and if they were all signed at the age of 24, would place Allen’s contact at seven years $286 million with an annual average of $41 million.

While market value and negotiations are two separate entities as Beane and the Bills will need to factor in the salary cap and future implications of the contract, this would absolutely be a valuable contract for arguably the second-best quarterback in the league.  Moreover, this would result in reliability in a key position that the organization can continue to build upon for years to come.

Keep an eye out as the offseason progresses, especially following the draft at Beane will have a clearer picture of how the roster will look come August.  Expect Josh Allen to sign not only a large contract monetarily but a lengthy multi-year deal based on his young age and a lot of promise with a growing organization.
