Buffalo Bills: 6 moves they should make before the start of free agency

Release Quinton Jefferson (or Vernon Butler)

There are a number of other candidates that could be released leading up to the start of the league year and free agency. This includes players like Mitch Morse and Mario Addison, however the challenge is by releasing these players, there isn’t a clear replacement on the roster. If the Buffalo Bills release either they are likely to look outside the franchise to find a replacement.

However, this isn’t the same at defensive tackle as the Buffalo Bills have some excellent depth where they could release Quinton Jefferson or Vernon Butler and still be in good shape at the position. Both players were signed as free agents last offseason and while both showed flashes at times it is hard to justify the cap hit for this year.

The question is which of these players, and it certainly could be both, are released as they would result in similar cap space with Jefferson freeing up $6.5 million and Butler at $6.8 million. The return of Star Lotulelei along with Ed Oliver, Justin Zimmer, and Harrison Phillips gives the team enough depth at the position that it would make sense for the team to make this move.
