The cornerback position is one that the Buffalo Bills are sure to address and they, fortunately, have plenty of options this offseason. One of those options is 49ers’ cornerback Richard Sherman who said ‘it’s pretty clear’ he won’t be returning to San Francisco next season.

Does that mean he could be an option for the Buffalo Bills? Let’s take a look at the player and why he might be a good fit.

Career

Richard Sherman started his career with the Seattle Seahawks and was a fifth round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. He became a starter almost immediately, starting 10 games as a rookie. He eventually became one of the top cornerbacks in the league and a key part of the Seahawks “Legion of Boom”.

Recently he has spent the past three years with the San Francisco 49ers, starting 34 games over that stretch. This past season though he played only five games after dealing with a calf injury for most of the year.

In 10 seasons in the NFL, Sherman has played in 154 games, including playoffs, and has 40 interceptions which Pro Football Focus notes is the most over that time frame.

Why the Buffalo Bills should sign Richard Sherman

The Buffalo Bills have not been afraid of adding veteran cornerbacks over the years and if they were to add Richard Sherman, he would certainly be the best of this group. The addition of Sherman also would make him the clear starter while in past seasons when the Bills have added Josh Norman or Kevin Johnson, it has been to compete with Levi Wallace for the starting job.

He is a veteran player that has excelled in playing in zone defenses like what the Buffalo Bills run. In addition, he could step in as the team’s number two which is probably a better fit at this point in his career.

If the Buffalo Bills are not ready to commit to a long-term solution at the position, Richard Sherman could be a logical choice for the upcoming season.
