The Buffalo Bills could be potentially making the first big splash of free agency as they have reportedly inquired about free agent J.J. Watt. The former Houston Texans pass rusher was released last week by the team he has played the last 10 seasons for.

As Kimberly Martin at ESPN reported in her tweet, the Bills have inquired about Watt but also that there is mutual interest between the two parties.

However, the Bills will have plenty of competition as they are not the only team to reach out to Watt in recent days. The Cleveland Browns have been a rumored next stop for Watt and he is ‘seriously considering’ the Browns.

Along with the Browns, the Houston Texans division rival Tennessee Titans have also reportedly reached out to J.J. Watt this week. There are also logical connections for J.J. Watt to the Green Bay Packers (he played college at the University of Wisconsin) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (his brother T.J. Watt plays for the Steelers).

This is the first time in his career that J.J. Watt has experienced free agency after signing a six-year contract extension towards the end of his rookie contract in 2014. The defensive end tweeted on Wednesday his thoughts about free agency so far.

The sentiment certainly isn’t surprising considering how many teams have already reached out to J.J. Watt the past few days.

The question now is whether or not the Buffalo Bills can get a deal done. The team currently does have limited cap space but could make some moves to open up enough cap space for a deal for Watt. The front office should also make improving the pass rush a priority, which is certainly something that J.J. Watt would help in this defense.

Since J.J. Watt was released, he is able to sign at any point and doesn’t need to wait for the start of free agency next month. This could mean a decision comes sooner rather than later.
