The Buffalo Bills signed Darron Lee to their practice squad on Monday.
The trade deadline is less than 24 hours away and while the Buffalo Bills haven’t made any trades, they did make a roster move on Monday. Last week, it was reported that the Bills had brought linebacker Darron Lee in for a visit.
They officially signed him on Monday and added him to their practice squad. The team made a corresponding move by releasing linebacker Ahmad Gooden.
The addition of Darron Lee is a smart one by the Buffalo Bills because it gives them a player that is low-risk but high-reward. Lee was a former first round pick by the New York Jets but struggled in his few years in the league.
He was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs last year and started two games at linebacker. However, and this is one of the reasons it makes sense for the Bills, is that he has experience on special teams.
Last year, Lee finished with 31 total tackles while playing 14% of the defensive snaps for the Chiefs but played 57% of their special teams snaps.
However, that isn’t the only reason Lee was signed and his skill set should give him a great chance to see significant snaps on defense. Sean McDermott‘s defense likes smaller, faster, more athletic linebackers which is exactly what Darron Lee is. He is actually slightly bigger than Matt Milano at 6’1″ and 232 pounds.
It would not be surprising to see Darron Lee step into the starting lineup sooner rather than later. While Matt Milano continues to work back from his pec injury, the team has turned to A.J. Klein and the results have not been good.
The Buffalo Bills have been hit hard by injuries at linebacker this year but the addition of Darron Lee gives them a player with starting experience that has the skill set that the coaching staff looks for from the players at this position.
