Buffalo Bills: Key matchups in Week 1 against the New York Jets
Taron Johnson vs. Jamison Crowder
The New York Jets brought in a number of new pass catchers for Sam Darnold with players like Breshad Perriman, Chris Hogan, and Denzil Mims. The Jets had been dealing with injuries all training camp at the position but all signs point to Perriman and Mims playing on Sunday.
However, the wide receiver that is the most important to this offense is the slot receiver, Jamison Crowder.
Crowder joined the Jets last offseason and finished the year with 78 receptions, 833 receiving yards, and six touchdowns. In the two games against the Bills though, he had 22 receptions, which was 28% of his season total, and 165 receiving yards.
It remains to be seen how much Perriman, Hogan, and Mims play in Week 1 which could mean that Crowder once again gets a significant target share in this game.
That means that Taron Johnson is going to have his work cut out for him as the team’s starting nickel corner. Last season, Johnson suffered an injury in Week 1 against the Jets that cost him four games but returned as the starter and finished the year playing 12 games.
It will not be surprising to see Jamison Crowder get double-digit targets but the key will be to limit the yards after the catch with a receiver like Crowder.
