Sean McDermott’s defensive scheme
Any player that wins the award needs to be in a system that matches their strengths and highlights their abilities. This is one of the reasons that Tremaine Edmunds is set up to win this award this coming season.
Last year, the Buffalo Bills practiced with the Carolina Panthers prior to their preseason game and Luke Kuechly was asked about Edmunds. He said Edmunds had the “perfect body type” considering he is big and long at 6’5″ but also has tremendous speed that allows him to get sideline to sideline.
The biggest leap that Edmunds can make this year is just the mental aspect and the processing prior to the snap. As he gets more comfortable in this defense, he will not be as hesitant trying to think through everything and just be able make the play.
The tackle totals have always been there as he has broken 115 total tackles each of the past two seasons but if he can add some more of those “big plays” in the forms of turnovers or sacks, it will go a long way to help his chances to win Defensive Player of the Year.
