What do the Bills do at tight end?

Last season, one of the areas Buffalo was supposed to excel at was the tight end position.

After drafting Dawson Knox out of Ole Miss, many believed that the AFC East had a new ‘Gronk’ and this time, he would be playing against the New England Patriots. Sadly, this was not the case as the plethora of Buffalo tight ends in Knox, Jason Croom, Tommy Sweeny, Tyler Kroft and Lee Smith failed to meet expectations. In fact, between the entire room, Buffalo’s tight ends only accounted for four touchdowns. To put that into perspective offensive tackle Dion Dawkins had the same number of receiving touchdowns as both Kroft and Smith.

Moving forward to the 2020 season, though there are new faces, the expectations that were supposed to be met last season are as high as ever. With Buffalo in a real position to take the AFC East, getting solid production out of the tight end room is crucial.

We have seen on more than one occasion that offensive success can be linked to the production of a tight end, most recently with the Kansas City Chiefs and Travis Kelce. With a weapon like Kelce aiding in pass/run production, but also being an air-threat, Patrick Mahomes was able to put the ball in his hands to make plays.

For that same recipe to work for the Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen, they will need someone, preferably Knox, to make that essential next step.
