Round 3, 84th Overall: Chris Rumph II (Edge), Duke

One of the most interesting prospects in this draft to watch, Rumph lines up all over the front seven for the Blue Devils and could be a game breaker at the professional level.

Breaking out in his sophomore year last season, Rumph had 47 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks and 3 passes defended. Whenever watching Duke’s defense you notice Rumph’s presence as he can be seen all over the field.

While the Buffalo Bills doesn’t need any help on the edge immediately, they emphasize versatility on defense. With Rumph they have the ability to line him up on the edge or run stunts with him that attack the A or B gaps like he regularly did in college.

At just 6’3″ and 225 pounds, Rumph will need to add to his frame to be an every down starter at edge, if not he may be able to mold into a niche role which would fit perfectly with the Bills. A Lorenzo Alexander type role that was employed on the Bills defense last season could be a great role for the talented rusher. Alexander just played 48% of the snaps on defense last season, but was able to rush from almost every position on the front 7, which is something Rumph would appear to thrive in.

Below Rumph comes right through the A gap and forces a fumble on the quarterback:

While the Duke pass rusher hasn’t been asked to play much coverage over his college career, with his athletic profile he should be able to cover similar to the way Alexander did.
