Buffalo Bills: Tre’Davious White named best zone coverage corner by Touchdown Wire

The Buffalo Bills starting cornerback Tre’Davious White was recently named the best coverage cornerback by Touchdown Wire.

Last year was a breakout year for Buffalo Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White as he finished with 58 total tackles and six interceptions, which was tied for the league lead. He also was named to the first-team All-Pro for the first time as well as his first selection to the Pro Bowl.

There is no question that White’s play last year put the league on notice and he is now being discussed as a part of that top tier at his his position. One of the reasons is that the skill set White has is a perfect match for the defense that Sean McDermott runs, which relies heavily on zone coverage.

It didn’t come as much of a surprise to see Tre’Davious White recently be named the best zone coverage corner by Doug Farrar at Touchdown Wire. The Bills cornerback was able to edge out San Francisco 49ers Richard Sherman for that top spot.

"White allowed 25 receptions on 43 targets for 325 yards, no touchdowns, five interceptions, and a Positive Play Rate of 48.8. Given his ability to dominate against the league’s best receivers on a week-to-week basis, and his remarkable consistency, White made his claim as the league’s best zone cornerback obvious, and inarguable."

When the Buffalo Bills selected Tre’Davious White in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, there was certainly high expectations. He was the player the team selected after trading back with Kansas City Chiefs, who selected Patrick Mahomes, but also he was replacing Stephon Gilmore.

Gilmore in his own right is one of the top cornerbacks in the league and the coaching staff expected White to step in right away as a rookie. He did an excellent job under those circumstances and had four interceptions that year.

The Buffalo Bills have one of the top defenses in the league and this is due in large part to Tre’Davious White’s play on the field. The fact that they have one of the best corners in the league gives the coaching staff more flexibility because he doesn’t need as much help and this allows them to be a little more creative with their scheme.

While the expectations are high for Tre’Davious White entering 2020, he has already shown he can rise to the occasion and he should have another big year for the Buffalo Bills as one of the top cornerbacks in the league.
