Buffalo Bills: Ranking the tight ends of the AFC East
By Rob Spehar
2) Miami Dolphins
Projected Starter – Mike Gesicki
When the season began for the Miami Dolphins, there was hope. That was quickly dashed after the 59-10 drubbing at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens during Miami’s home opener. Throughout the season there were ups and downs, but mostly downs. But then something happened and things seemed to turn around in a 26-18 Week 9 win against the New York Jets. The Dolphins proceeded to finish the season 5-4 and the emergence of a few players renewed that early hope in the 2020 season. One of those players was tight end Mike Gesicki.
The depth at the position for Miami is not the greatest but what Gesicki showed in the final stretch of the 2019 season provides hope for the Dolphins offense and new quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Playing in all 16 games, which shows his durability, his numbers were impressive posting 51 receptions for 570 yards and 5 touchdowns. He will be remembered for his game winning touchdown catch in last season’s Week 17 road win in Foxborough which kept the Patriots from earning a bye in the first round of the playoffs.
Selected with the 42nd pick out of Penn State in the 2018 NFL Draft, Gesicki has the size and the strength and is a great red zone target when called upon. After him, the talent level drops off with Michael Roberts and Durham Smythe on the roster. Expect Gesicki to continue his emergence and be a big part of the Dolphin offense next season.
