Buffalo Bills: Tre’Davious White could reset cornerback market

According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, Tre’Davious White is one of the cornerbacks that could reset the market this summer.

While the Buffalo Bills were hoping to add players to their current roster, and they certainly did that, one of the main focuses were to extend key players that were coming to the end of their contract. This includes Tre’Davious White, who the team has already picked up his fifth year option, keeping him with the Bills through at least 2021.

However, the front office shouldn’t stop there and it would be beneficial to get a long-term deal done this year. The bad news is that there is no question it is going to be pretty costly, but White showed last year that he is one of the best cornerbacks in the league and should be paid as such.

Recently, Sports Ilustrated’s Albert Breer did a power ranking of the players, non-quarterbacks, who are in line for contract extensions. In these power rankings, Breer names four cornerbacks, and within the group is Tre’Davious White.

"4) A group of CBs: Marlon Humphrey (Ravens), Marshon Lattimore (Saints), Jalen Ramsey (Rams), Tre’Davious White (Bills). Fun fact: the NFL’s two highest-paid corners are new teammates (Miami’s Xavien Howard and Byron Jones). And those guys are good players, but it’s clear that a market correction is coming. Each of these four have potential to lead it."

If the Buffalo Bills are able to reach a new deal with Tre’Davious White and he earns a contract that makes him one of the top-paid cornerbacks he would join Dolphins cornerbacks Xavien Howard and Byron Jones at the top. This would mean the AFC East would have four cornerbacks in the Top 6 with New England Patriots’ Stephon Gilmore currently fifth in the league, according to Spotrac.

The selection of Tre’Davious White was the first Sean McDermott made as the Buffalo Bills head coach and probably remains the best pick. He was expected to replace Gilmore in this defense, stepped in to the starting lineup as a rookie and has steadily improved each year. This past season was by far his best and he finished with six interceptions, which was tied for the league lead, as well as his first Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro selections.

In the long run, it could actually be a wise move not to wait because if extensions are reached with players like Marlon Humphrey or Jalen Ramsey, it could only help Tre’Davious White in his negotiations and raise his asking price. Although, White is under contract for two more years, the Buffalo Bills should try and get a deal done this summer.
