These two teams met last season at New Era Field and it was a dominant performance by the Buffalo D, holding Denver to a season low 134 yards of total offense. Devin Singletary ran for 106 yards and Josh Allen was efficient going 15 for 25 throwing for 185 yards, two touchdowns and an interception against another top 10 defense. This time around, the game will be out west in the Mile High city that will showcase two young quarterbacks who love to sling the ball and create big plays and have strong leadership skills.
Nothing about the Broncos offense last season was impressive except for Cortland Sutton. Finishing 28th overall in points scored and yards gained, Denver produced some uninspiring football games. After seeing rookie quarterback Drew Lock finish the last 5 games of the season at the helm going 4-1, general manager John Elway had something to build on. The offseason ended up being a busy one for this franchise with offensive coordinator Rick Scangarello heading out and Pat Shurmur (former Giants head coach) coming in. They solidified the offensive line with a quiet but strong signing of guard Graham Glasgow. Former Charger Melvin Gordon was brought in to be an effective pass catcher out of the backfield and will be a perfect compliment to Phillip Lindsay, giving Denver a great 1-2 punch.
The 2020 NFL Draft saw Elway decide to build around his young signal caller. He went almost entirely on offense making the Broncos so quick on paper, it’s scary. He grabbed Alabama wide receiver Jerry Jeudy with the first pick and then grabbed speedy receiver K.J. Hamler in the second. Lloyd Cushenberry was added as a plug and play center and then added another fast tight end, Albert Okwuegbunan, to pair with Noah Fant. Elway put this draft together with the Chiefs in mind, but to also put the rest of the league on notice that the Broncos are back.
Last time, the Bills faced an unknown QB in Brandon Allen. Now they will be facing Drew Lock who has given a spark to a franchise clamoring for a franchise QB. The Broncos look completely different on offense and will be a great test for the Buffalo defense and can flex their muscles by showing how they can keep up with Denver’s speed all over the field. Let’s not forget about Von Miller and Bradley Chubb lurking in the wings either. This has the makings of an entertaining game with deep passes flying everywhere in the thin air of Mile High.
