The XFL kicked off on Saturday with their two first games and both games saw big performances from former Buffalo Bills.
For Buffalo Bills fans wanting more football after last weekend’s Super Bowl was able to get that chance thanks to the return of the XFL. This new version consists of eight teams and those teams are filled with numerous former NFL players, including players who at one time were on the Bills roster.
In the league’s first game, the D.C. Defenders beat the Seattle Dragons by a score of 31-19. The Defenders are led by Cardale Jones, who was a fourth round pick by the Bills back in 2016. He had a strong performance going 16 of 26 for 291 yards and two touchdown passes.
One of those touchdowns was on the trick play below and he connected with another former Bill in Khari Lee. The tight end out of of Bowie State was claimed by the Bills off waivers at the start of the 2017 season. He remained with the team until they waived him in October of 2018.
While Jones, and the play Lee was apart of will get most of the headlines it was Austin Proehl who will go into the record books as scoring the first ever touchdown in the XFL. Proehl, who is the son of former NFL wide receiver Ricky Proehl, was a seventh round pick by the Bills back in 2018.
However, Proehl was waived prior to the start of the season and had stops with the Tennessee Titans and Los Angeles Rams before joining the XFL. He finished the game with five receptions for 88 yards and two touchdowns.
In the second game on Saturday, the Houston Roughnecks faced the Los Angeles Wildcats and won easily 37-17. The Roughnecks wasted little time getting on the scoreboard and on the third play of the game, PJ Walker found Cam Phillips for a 50-yard touchdown pass.
Phillips was signed as undrafted free agent prior to the 2018 season and spent most of the year on the practice squad. He was back with the Bills this past offseason but was waived at the start of the season. He finished his first XFL game with four receptions for 67 yards and the one touchdown.
The XFL will have two more games on Sunday with the Tampa Bay Vipers facing the New York Guardians and the St. Louis Battlehawks facing the Dallas Renegades.
