5 Buffalo Bills with plenty to gain in training camp

4. T.J. Yeldon – RB
With LeSean McCoy and Frank Gore on the roster, the Bills’ depth chart at running back is far more impressive than in years past. It gets even deeper considering the selection of FAU back Devin Singletary in the third-round in the 2019 NFL Draft. For T.J. Yeldon — previously of the Jacksonville Jaguars — earning a spot on the roster and playing significant snaps isn’t going to be easy.
The Bills signed Yeldon late into the free agency process to a two year, $3.2 million deal with minimal guarantees. Some have claimed he’ll be a surprise roster cut, factoring in the team-friendly contract. However, the former ‘Bama standout can offer the Bills offense with stability as a third-down back. Throughout his NFL career, Yeldon has succeeded as a pass blocker and receiver out of the backfield.
On the Jaguars, — throughout four seasons — Yeldon averaged a reasonably high 4.57 targets a game and turned that into a career total of 171 receptions for 1,302 yards and six touchdowns. Yet, during spring practice, he was the fourth-string back behind the three aforementioned.
In training camp, Yeldon must prove what many believe — that he’s a capable NFL runner who wasn’t utilized correctly with the Jaguars behind Leonard Fournette and Chris Ivory. What he has to gain isn’t just that; it’s a roster spot, and to a further extent, a legitimate role in a revamped Bills offense.
