Buffalo Bills: A quick look at FanSided’s Week 17 QB rankings
Buffalo Bills fans may be a bit peeved with the latest quarterback rankings from FanSided ahead of Week 17’s season finale.
It is time for a look at another list that may make some Buffalo Bills fans mad.
It’s all motivation at this point.
Matt Verderame of FanSided recently posted his Week 17 quarterback rankings and had Josh Allen all the way down at No. 28 overall.
Here is what he had to say about the rookie:
"Allen is entertaining, but he’s not playing well from the pocket. For those wondering how he’s this low despite the low-expectation Bills having five wins, consider this. Allen has thrown 53 more passes for 145 fewer yards than Nick Mullens. He also has seven passing touchdowns against 11 interceptions. It’s been ugly."
Has it been pretty? Not quite. Has it been ugly? That’s a bit harsh.
One thing to keep in mind when evaluating Allen is the fact he is the team’s leader rusher. That is not a great reflection upon the running backs, but it does show his value to the offense this season.
Sometimes it sounds like I’m being an Allen apologist when I point out the lack of help he had for most of the year at wide receiver, and the fact his offensive line isn’t the strongest. Yet that plays a huge role in why his passing numbers aren’t exactly easy on the eyes.
In general, I get where Verderame is coming from. By simply looking at Allen’s stats, it looks like the Bills don’t have much going for them on offense. But his entire game, running and passing, needs to be considered as well.
For fans who are upset with Allen’s play, it is only his first season. And it comes in a season when the team was poised to struggle from the start, even if some believed otherwise.
The goal is for him to use 2018 as a learning experience and be much better in 2019. If that doesn’t happen, then we can all start to worry.
