Buffalo Bills 2019 Roster Outlook: The quarterbacks

As Josh Allen goes, so will this team. He is undoubtedly the quarterback of the present and future for the team and his growth has been promising as the year has progressed.

Through his first six games of the season, Allen looked like what most expected him be coming out of college – inaccurate, struggled reading defenses, inconsistent footwork and overall didn’t look ready to play in the NFL. In his last five games Josh has looked like a completely different quarterback with touch, accuracy, a better understanding of defenses and consistency in the pocket.

The growth over the past five games has been extremely encouraging. Allen has at least one touchdown in three of the last five games and two quarterback ratings of over 89 in the same time span.

While he has taken off as a runner, Allen was able to take another step forward as a passer against the Detroit Lions. I wrote about how I think he had his best game as a passer as he delivered the ball on time and in tight windows. His touchdown pass to Robert Foster was impressive, and with time, he was able to make a lot of impressive throws.

There is no doubt that Allen is the focal point of the entire franchise. He has incredible tools with his size, height, arm strength and freak athletic ability. Offensive coordinator Brian Daboll has done an excellent job of tapping into each of those things and getting what he can out of Allen with limited talent around him.

Moving forward, Allen will need more weapons and a better offensive line to truly reach his potential. However, as a rookie that came in needing time to develop, he has quickly become the best player on the offense. He still needs to progress in several areas, but the signs of growth of there.

Next season will be a true test to see if Allen can take the next step in his progression. He needs to show some major consistency in everything that he does in order to become the franchise quarterback the team needs to move forward with.
