A video surfaced after Sunday’s game showing Buffalo Bills veteran Jerry Hughes confronting an official as soon as the game ended.
The Buffalo Bills lost a close one on Sunday, so it is reasonable to expect the players to be upset.
But Jerry Hughes was upset about something other than the result.
The video shows Hughes confronting an official and claiming that the official called him a not so nice name.
Hughes essentially denied the existence of this confrontation after the game, but it was clear he was still emotional.
The latest came today, via Sean McDermott:
Clearly McDermott isn’t too angry at Hughes, and based on the video it would be hard to believe that Hughes would be so upset if nothing actually happened.
There also appears to be some history with this official:
So this is clearly not a good look for the NFL. I would say that an investigation should take place, but we all know how NFL investigations go. I wouldn’t expect anything major to happen in this situation, and it may just fade away.
It is not a good look for a player to go after an official, but it is an even worse look for an official to say anything like that to a player in the middle of a game. Players are passionate and are already on edge in the heat of the game.
An official saying anything like this to a player should result in immediate termination, especially if other refs have been let go for things such as missing a false start call.
The loss was frustrating enough, so hopefully Hughes doesn’t get any fine for the situation. Refs need to be held accountable for their actions as well.
