Dark horse

Bills fans should start getting familiar with the name Levi Wallace. The undrafted cornerback has been a dark horse his entire life, and this year is no different. From having to endure the devastating loss of a father that he idolized dearly, to taking the unconventional route of being a walk-on at the University of Alabama, Wallace has made a habit of overcoming daunting obstacles.

“His story is remarkable,” said Sean McDermott in an interview shared on Bills.com “He is really a guy that has earned everything he’s gotten, I believe he was a walk-on the first two years at Alabama; that’s not a place where you would associate walk-ons having a lot of success and he obviously did. To meet him and to read about his story … that’s a great story to sink your teeth into.”

Wallace’s 4.63 40-yard dash time will not jump off the page, but his tenacity and relative production will. As a senior, the 6-foot-tall, 179-pound corner led the Crimson Tide with 15 pass breakups, while chipping in with three interceptions.

If you’re a college football fan, you’ll know that Alabama’s secondary was loaded last year – with the likes of Minkah Fitzpatrick routinely being avoided by opposing quarterbacks. As a result, Wallace did not mind the extra work.

Although the Bills starting cornerback situation is firmly set, with White and Vontae Davis manning the outside, the remaining open vacancies are very much up for grabs. Wallace is set to go toe-to-toe with the likes of a historically unimpressive Phillip Gaines, fourth-round rookie Taron Johnson, the enigmatic duo of Breon Borders and Lafayette Pitts, as well as fellow undrafted free-agent Ryan Carter to secure a spot on the team’s 53-man roster. I, for one, like his chances.
