I suppose it would be a travesty if we didn’t mention the Bills don’t officially have a starting QB yet. They enter camp with two veterans in AJ McCarron and Nathan Peterman, along with rookie Josh Allen.

The offensive line and the McCoy situation may help shape this battle. McCarron will come in as the early frontrunner to the job. He can win the job by having the most command of the huddle, and being the most accurate of the QBs. Where he lacks in arm strength, he can make up with anticipation and familiarity with the NFL speed.

Nathan Peterman had good OTAs this spring. What he needs to work on is developing his third reads during plays. While we are all familiar with the five interception game against the Chargers last year, Peterman was very good at getting the ball out immediately after completing his drops. While that’s a plus, defenses keyed off on his timing and jumped routes. If Peterman can show he’s developed some additional reading abilities, then he could start Week 1.

Lastly, but most important is rookie Josh Allen. Allen has the most talent in this competition, and by all accounts the same or greater intelligence in picking up the playbook. What he lacks is consistency.

Allen has to put multiple practices together, along with a strong first two preseason games if he expects to start Week 1. The key is multiple practices in a row. During OTAs he had some amazing plays, but in between those were poor plays that will prevent him from starting until corrected.
