Buffalo Bills 2018 Position Battles: Right and left guard
Ryan Groy, 5th Year
(6-foot-5, 320 pounds)
Contract: 1 year- $2.5 Million
Career Notes:
- Was an undrafted free agent in 2014 out of Wisconsin.
- Has 11 career starts (three at guard).
- Started seven games for the Bills during the 2016 season (Wood leg injury).
- Has been cut by three different teams.
Analysis:
His play is by no means pretty, but he gets the job done. He is consistent in his run blocking and continues to get better in pass protection. Groy may not be a household name, but he is recognized as a solid young offensive line prospect.
The Rams signed him to an offer sheer when he became a free agent last offseason. The Buffalo Bills quickly matched the offer, so I believe this regime has plans in place for his playing time to increase. Wood and Incognito’s departures open the door for Groy to make an impact.
Most of his starts came as a center in 2016, but he has the ability to play all three positions along the interior of the line. He shows good footwork and is rarely bowled over from a strong interior pass rush. Ultimately, I believe he showed enough during his limited starting experience to warrant starting consideration. He will be in a battle for guard or center this offseason.
