Buffalo Bills: Five Biggest Draft Busts In Recent History
No. 1: Quarterback, J.P. Losman, 1st Round (22nd overall), 2004
2004 was a truly great quarterback draft. The Buffalo Bills picked later in the draft, causing them to miss out on Eli Manning, Phillip Rivers and Ben Roethlisberger, all still in the top-half of the league talent-wise.
The result of this was Buffalo selecting Tulane alum, J.P. Losman.
Losman is an all-time bust. The Bills were desperate for a quarterback in 2004, but they picked a little too late in the draft. Missing out on Big Ben by two picks and instead selecting Lee Evan with their initial first-round selection. They then decided to trade back up into the first round, surrendering their 2005 first-round pick to get Losman.
Here is a quick look at the players that came off the board right before him and right after him. Keep in mind that Buffalo originally picked 13th and then traded back into the first round to pick 22nd.
- 11th – Ben Roethlisberger (QB)
- 21st – Vince Wilfork (DT)
- 24th – Stephen Jackson (RB)
- 90th – Matt Schaub (QB)
- 106th – Luke McCown (QB)
The reason this is the biggest bust in Bills recent history is because they lost two first-round picks on a quarterback that broke his leg in his rookie year.
Losman earned a 10-23 record, only playing a full 16-game season once in his career. Buffalo wasted five seasons on Losman whom at his best, threw for just north of 3,000 yards in a season.
