Buffalo Bills: Running back no longer a position of strength

Previously a cause for optimism, the running back position is suddenly looking decidedly precarious for the Buffalo Bills

Just a few weeks ago, there were whispers that Fred Jackson‘s place on the Buffalo Bills roster was in jeopardy. These rumors emanated as a result of the new regime, combined with his advancing age.

Today, Jackson’s position looks decidedly more secure. Yes, he’s set to remain out for another couple of weeks with a hamstring injury, but that is nothing compared to some of the other running backs on the team.

The most recent, and surprising, name to join the casualty list is Karlos Williams. As reported by Tyler Dunne of The Buffalo News, the 22-year old was hospitalized on Tuesday with an injury.

At this stage, it isn’t exactly clear what is wrong with Williams. However, Dunne indicates it is serious, and the Davenport, Florida native is set to miss multiple weeks.

This is a real shame for Williams, who has had his running style compared to Eric Dickerson. He was making a push to be the main backup to LeSean McCoy, and rushed for 40 yards in the opening preseason game.

As a result of the injury, the Bills have signed Ricky Seale. The little-known rookie saw sporadic playing time last year for Stanford, carrying just 23 times for 57 yards.

Bryce Brown was another player who looked impressive against the Carolina Panthers, leading all rushers in the game, with 52 yards. However, as confirmed by Dunne, he has also now been sidelined, with a hamstring injury.

Obviously this latest batch of injuries are the last thing Rex Ryan needed to hear. Anthony Dixon suffered a calf injury a couple of weeks ago, and is expected to be sidelined for another couple of weeks.

Things have gotten so bad, that wide receiver Marcus Thigpen has been used as the third back in drills this week. Ironically, the only running back who is currently relatively healthy and can be relied upon, is McCoy.

However, with the 27-year old firmly slotted in as the starter, Ryan isn’t exactly looking to feature him much in the preseason. While finding a starting quarterback remains the priority, it will be interesting to watch the running game in the upcoming contest against the Cleveland Browns.

Next: Don't count out EJ Manuel just yet
