Do The Buffalo Bills Have A Reason To Panic

facebooktwitterreddit

So, yesterday Chris Burke at SI.COM told us all that the Buffalo Bills need to be in “panic mode” over our current quarterback situation. He went so far as to say that there might be more upside for the New York Jets sporting Geno Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick than Buffalo’s EJ Manuel and Matt Cassel

Really Chris? Listen, I know Buffalo gets no respect because of the 15 year playoff draught but, you did see Geno Smith play last year right? You do know that Fitzpatrick is suiting up for his sixth team next year? You do know all that right?

And listen, before I get too close to the edge, I know Buffalo’s QB situation is not pretty. But guess what? Neither is two-thirds of the AFC’s. If you’re not the Indianapolis Colts, Denver Broncos, Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens or San Diego Chargers, than you are heading into the 2015 season with about the same quarterback situation as Buffalo’s.  And most of you do not have Sammy Watkins, Robert Woods, Percy Harvin and LeSean McCoy helping out your not so talented, and not so “franchise-qb-like” quarterback.

Hey Cincinnati Bengal fan…you happy with Andy Dalton? Feel good about your championship chances with him? I didn’t think so.

Is Derek Carr for the Oakland Raiders the second coming of Drew Brees or JP Losman? We are going to find out now aren’t we?

The Tennessee Titans just drafted Marcus Mariota. OK, we’ll see. Ryan Leaf was once a can’t miss prospect.

Cleveland Browns? Enough said.

Is Buffalo’s QB situation that bad? Hey listen, Cassel has an 11 win season and a playoff appearance on his resume. Cassel is only 32 and he has been a pro-bowl alternate. That’s a lot more than Ryan Fitzpatrick can say. Anyway, back to the AFC.

Is Jacksonville sold on Blake Bortles? There is a big difference between hoping and knowing.

How about the Texans? Who is pulling the trigger in Houston? I don’t know either.

And that brings me to the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins. Ryan Tannehill keeps his job on the often used term “potential”.  Does anybody in south Florida really believe that this kid is the answer? Has he got anybody on south beach forgetting about Dan Marino? I didn’t think so. And the Patriots are going to start the season with a second year kid who played his football at Eastern Illinois University. Bill Belichick better be a genius if Tom Brady sits out all four games.

Here’s my point. Somebody has to make the playoffs with a quarterback that is not going to the hall of fame. Occasionally, somebody wins the Super Bowl with Brad Johnson, Trent Dilfer, Jim Plunkett or Mark Rypien as the quarterback. In Buffalo there is no reason to panic about the quarterback situation.

The state of quarterback play in today’s NFL is something just above awful and just below average. And that’s were Buffalo finds themselves. There is enough talent on this roster to make the playoffs. That’s obvious. So, let’s let this QB thing play out just a little. Cassel? Maybe. Is EJ Manuel improving? GM Doug Whaley who drafted him number 1 sure hopes so. Plus, what exactly are we going to be asking our quarterback to do?

Rex Ryan didn’t ask all that much out of a rookie named Mark Sanchez and the New York Jets ground and pounded their way to back to back AFC Championship games. I don’t know about you but after the last 15 years I lay awake dreaming about a season that ends in the AFC Championship game.

Don’t panic, it’s only May.
