Buffalo Bills Draft Prospects: Maxx Williams

As we move closer to the draft, we continue our look at prospects that might be available for the Buffalo Bills come day 2 of the draft with their 50th and 81st pick. We have looked at the defensive side of the ball as well as the offensive line so far. Today we will take a look at some of the tight ends that are available in this years draft.

Maxx Williams is the first tight end that we will be taking a look at. Coming out of Minnesota, he set the single season school record for receiving yards and touchdowns with 569 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns. He started 10 of 11 games last year, missed one with a calf injury.

He is a top performer in multiple categories from the combine having a 4.78 40 yard dash, 34.5 verticle jump, 117.0 broad jump, and a 4.37 sec 20 yard shuttle.

Some strengths and weaknesses of Maxx Williams are…

"Primarily used as move tight end. Straight-line wheels to beat linebackers and safeties. Accelerates to top speed quickly on crossers and speed outs. Speed to chew up cushion and open a throwing window over the top. Will threaten seam and dominated defenders on wheel routes. Red-zone winner. Can do damage after the catch and shows playmaking aptitude with tight end screens. Extends and goes all out for the catch. Got a foot inbounds on three circus catches. Eighty-two percent of his catches were for either a first down or touchdown.ody is a little soft and could use additional weight work to handle NFL hits. Runs upright, rounded routes that lack salesmanship and shake. Leans into breaks, tipping his hand and bringing tighter coverage. Hip tightness stymies ability to sink and cut crisply. Needs to do better job over deep middle of using frame to shield throw from safeties.– NFL.com"

Maxx Williams is being projected in the 2nd and 3rd rounds for most mock drafts. I have seen him as high as a late 1st round as well. It is very likely that he is available when the Buffalo Bills come on the clock at 50th. He is being compared to Jeremy Shockey. He seems to also have a lot of confidence, which might be a turn off to some teams.

The bottom line on Maxx Williams is…

"Pass-catching, move tight end with straight-line play speed and an ability to stretch defenses deep. Williams comes from NFL bloodlines and has the self confidence often found in a former player’s son, but he needs to improve his route running in order to become a more complete receiving threat. The Buffalo Bills have two tight ends that have shown that they can produce. Charles Clay needs no introduction as a hybrid tight end. Marquise Grey is the other guy, that is very similar in style to Charles Clay. Even with the versatility of both of these guys, the Buffalo Bills may need to look at another tight end for depth purposes. Maxx Williams could move the Buffalo Bills into a duel tight end team and have a similar look to the Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez look that the New England Patriots had a couple of years ago.
