Normally, 1 of the quarterbacks will get more reps with the first team and become comfortable with the personnel on the first team offense. The other quarterbacks would have to work harder, getting less reps and working with the 2nd and 3rd stringers, where there may not be an equal performance from one group to another group.
Greg Roman has confirmed that there will be a quarterback competition in Buffalo and it will be a four way competition and that all 4 quarterbacks will get time with the first team.
"“I think all four are doing a very nice job in our meetings and in communicating, as we are in a teaching phase,” Roman said of Matt Cassel, EJ Manuel, Tyrod Taylor, and Jeff Tuel. “They’re all going to have ample opportunity to get out there and practice. When we start evaluating then we’ll start to play around with things a little bit, who’s with the first team the one day, and the next day, and so forth. Everyone will have a chance to work with the first team and everybody’s going to have ample opportunity to put their best foot forward. And then we’ll have a good feel for it as we go.”– PFT.com"
Not only will getting all the quarterbacks reps with the first team as it is being promised, but getting the ball to all the new additions on offense that will be looking to increase their livelihood as well. Roman has a suggestion for this as well.
"“Just get two balls,” Roman said. “Change the rules.”– PFT.com"
That would work quite well for this team, as they have a number of players that will be looking for the ball, but this could also mean that they have longer sustained drives in which everyone gets the ball. If the defense can play shut down defense all year long, this will also increase the offensive time on the field, which will in crease the touches.
"“That stat we are about is winning,” Roman said. “Everybody understands that in a team sport, sometimes you’re doing the dirty work and sometimes you’re getting the glory, but if it all ends up in helping the team win then everybody benefits, and it’s pretty obvious. However, I think you have to have guys, character guys, and I believe we have those guys. So, it’s a great problem, if you want to look at it that way.”– PFT.com"
We could see a number of formations with different personnel in place to get people the ball in unorthodox ways. We might see a style of the wildcat with Tyrod Taylor quarterbacking with Charles Clay in the backfield or even Percy Harvin. The options are endless as is the excitement at this point.
