Buffalo Bills: Wide Receiver Breakdown

One of the position battles for the Buffalo Bills in this years training camp is at the wide receiver position. As I see it, there are two battles going on within the recevier position. The first one is who is going to win out the number 1 recevier designation.

With Sammy Watkins, Robert Woods, and Mike Williams as possible contenders for that number 1 designation, I think that it might go to the veteran of the group, Mike Williams. Sammy is versatile and is able to play outside as well as in the slot. He will attract defenders, which should leave single coverage for Williams and Woods to take advantage on their routes.

Marquise Goodwin is the 4th receiver that will not have a problem making the team. With his return ability and just plain sick speed, Goodwin is a guarantee for the 4th spot. A 4 receiver set could see both Goodwin and Watkins going deep with Williams and Woods over the middle at various depths. Most defenses, don’t have the talent to cover all four of them along with C.J. Spiller or Fred Jackson out of the backfield, and don’t forget the 6’7 TE, Scott Chandler somewhere in there as well (who wouldn’t be out their in a 4 receiver set but, I got excited).

The real position battle for the receivers is going to be the 5th and 6th spot. It is not likely that the Bills will carry more than 6 but it is not out of the question. The 5th and 6th spots have potential owners as Chris Hogan, Marcus Easley and T.J. Graham. Hogan is probably a lock with his talent at the 5th spot. At least I see him there, with his physical ability (had more bench presses than any other receiver at the combine in 2012) and ran a 4.47 dash. This is faster than Stevie Johnson, 4.58, as well as Julio Jones, 4.48, just saying. Graham is a bit faster, 4.41, but lacks that physicality that Hogan has and that gives him the edge in my book.

As for the 6th spot, it will be a fight to the death between Graham and Easley. Which ever one is able to get that special teams spot is going to have the edge for this spot. Graham does give the Bills an option as trade. He does have the ability and the talent, and could easily be a 3rd or 4th wide receiver on another roster. Buffalo might be in the need of a position due to injury in the near future, hoping not though, but Graham might be the odd man out in this situation.
