Buffalo Bills: Vote Matt Barkley
If you asked anybody about what was going to be changing in this organization this offseason no one would have guessed this. Starting with a new man in charge of the team being Russ Brandon, a GM in the waiting Doug Whaley, a new head coach Doug Marrone and now the search for the new quarterback to lead this team into the future. The news of the releasing of Ryan Fitzpatrick was said to be coming eventually but some thought a restructure of the contract was the route to go. The Bills tried but when their request wasn’t granted the walking papers were issued. Looking at the free agent market I don’t think anyone is a good enough candidate to come in and compete to start. The next place to look is in the draft and a player I would like the Bills to go get is Matt Barkley.
Barkley coming off his fourth year at USC was sought to be a very high 1st round pick last season but elected to stay the full term. Before he committed to USC ESPN had him rated the first overall prospect in the nation for the class of 2009.
His freshmen year showed to be his worst year statistically. He threw for just over 2700 yards, 15 td’s, 17 int’s and a rating of 131.3. Now that’s not horribly terrible for a freshmen just getting his feet wet but it’s nothing to get excited over either. His sophomore season he progressed in all areas and showed he possibly could become a good quarterback in years to come. Then we hit his junior year and he showed fans and scouts everywhere he could play and put up some big numbers. Compared to his freshmen numbers his numbers now looked like: 3528 yards, 39 td’s, 7 int’s and a rating of 161.2. Not bad huh? That’s where everybody thought he would be electing to enter the draft but decided on playing a fourth year at USC. The numbers in that last year decreased a little bit along with an injury hurt his chances of being a number one overall pick or a top 3 pick. This may be true but I still think he can be a first round pick and play very well in this league.
I hope the Bills seriously take a look at him. He could be what this team has needed and we can finally move forward with an actual quarterback. I’m done with the just trying to get by and hoping a guy can pan out. Your thoughts on Matt Barkley or any other QB they should get?
