1 overlooked Bills training camp question is finally front and center

Training camp is officially kicking off for the Buffalo Bills today at St. John Fisher University, and it is the first official start of the Joe Brady era. Fans are curious to see how this new plan that the Bills have rolled out this past offseason will work. There is excitement for sure, but there also needs to be proof that all of the changes that the organization went through was worth it.

Sean McDermott established himself as one of the best head coaches that the organization had, but with the Bills consistently coming up short in the playoffs year-in and year-out, Buffalo made the change at head coach. It also didn’t help that the side of the ball that kept failing the Bills was their defense and McDermott was a defensive-minded coach.

With Brady stepping in as the head coach, this is the first time in a long time that someone with an offensive background is leading the team. When Brady was hired, everyone was wondering who he would bring in to fix the defense that had been a liability in the postseason. His answer was to bring in Jim Leonhard as the defensive coordinator, who comes from the Denver Broncos, who have had one of the best defensive units the last few seasons.

Leonhard will be implementing a 3-4 scheme, which is something that the Bills haven’t had since Rex Ryan and that ended being a disaster. However, it’s important to note that the Bills have brought in players that are a better fit for this new scheme. While fans are hopeful that Leonhard can turn this defense around for the better, Leonhard is the center of attention for one major question about the Bills going into training camp.

Bills have 1 major question to answer that is main focus of training camp

On the show First Things First, Danny Perkins brought up the question “Are they [the Bills] finally going to give Josh Allen a defense?” and this couldn’t be more spot on about the Bills.

“When we talk about Josh Allen, and him falling short in the postseason, I don’t find it to be fair compared to other quarterbacks who have fallen short in the postseason…He has largely been an excellent playoff quarterback. If we just look at the games in which he’s been eliminated in the postseason in the Josh Allen era, they [Bills’ defense] have averaged giving up 31.5 points per game and 400 yards per game in their playoff losses. And the Bills scored over 29 points in three of the five games that they have been eliminated from the playoffs." said Perkins.

Perkins co-host and former NFL head coach Eric Mangini then pushed back by showing the rankings of the Bills defense from 2021-2025 in terms of points per game and yards per game. While those rankings weren’t near the bottom of the league, anyone that has watched the Bills in the playoffs knows that it’s been the defense that has been the deciding factor in Buffalo losing.

Yes, Allen has screwed up in the playoffs. Against the Broncos in the Divisional Round last season, he was responsible for four turnovers himself. Then again, the Bills still managed to put up 30 points and force overtime. Imagine if the defense could have actually brought down Bo Nix late in the 4th quarter…the Bills might have actually advanced to the AFC championship game.

With the shakeup the Bills have gone through this past offseason, the defense will be the main focus for Bills Mafia throughout training camp and going into the season. We already know that the offense has been one of the top units for quite some time now. As for the defense, they have some proving to do and it will be Leonhard leading the way.
