It may not seem like it, but Brandon Beane and the Buffalo Bills will have their work cut out for them this offseason. Despite going 13-4 and losing by three points in the AFC championship game, the Bills are set to lose some important players that they are going to have to replace, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
Buffalo’s defense is the main reason why the Bills suffered yet another early playoff exit. They need help on the defensive line and in the secondary. For right now, their linebacker core of Terrel Bernard, Matt Milano, and Dorian Williams are solid. The Bills couldn’t defend the run, and their secondary became vulnerable once Christian Benford went down with a concussion in the conference championship.
One pending free agent that could be on his way out of Buffalo is safety Damar Hamlin. The good news for Buffalo is that they still have Taylor Rapp under contract and Cole Bishop is heading into his second year of his rookie deal. That doesn’t mean that the safety room doesn’t need to be addressed though.
An underrated safety is listed as the perfect free agent for Bills to sign
Gary Davenport from Bleacher Report is predicting that the perfect free agent signing for the Bills this offseason is safety Tre’Von Moehrig from the Las Vegas Raiders.
"Moehrig isn't a big name, but the fifth-year pro tallied a career-high 104 total tackles last year and is a top-15 safety in interceptions, forced incompletion rate, tackles for loss or no gain and defensive stops since 2023."Gary Davenport, Bleacher Report
The Raiders have been a mess for a long time, but Moehrig managed to make the best of the situation. He had his best year as a pro in a contract year and now he could get some suitors for his services. If Moehrig wanted to join a team that has stability and is in a win-now mode with a small safety room, the Bills are the perfect landing spot.
Sean McDermott has managed to help most secondary players that come into Buffalo make a big impact. It’s worked with players like Micah Hyde, Jordan Poyer, Tre’Davious White, Taylor Rapp, and Damar Hamlin (this past season).
Moehrig would be able to have a head coach who has a strength in getting the best out of secondary players and he would have a fair shot at becoming a starter for the defense. Depending on how the Bills can fix their salary cap situation, there is a chance that the Bills could pursue more secondary help and Moehrig would be a low-risk, high-reward player.
