Special teams is an aspect of the game that has become more important than it has ever been at one point. Typically, people tend to think about just the two phases of the game with the offense and the defense. However, there are plenty of games in history where the performance by the special teams unit has either won or lost a team a game.

Remember Week 5 out in Los Angeles when the Buffalo Bills won in a thriller in overtime over the Rams? Well, the Rams had two missed field goals (once in the first quarter, and then a blocked one in overtime that ultimately led to the Bills beating the Rams).

Buffalo's special teams unit has been very reliable in their first six games and a major reason why is because of Tyler Bass.

Tyler Bass is proving his worth after missing all of 2025

Bass missed all of 2025 with a pelvic injury, and prior to that injury, Bass was having major inconsistency. He's missed atleast 4 field goals in each season of his career, and he missed a combined 10 field goals from 2023-2024 in the regular season.

In the 2023 playoffs, Bass went 2/5 on field goal attempts which included going 1/3 from 40-49 yards out. Things weren't looking great for Bass, and he was losing trust from the fans.

Then after missing all of last season, it just added to the situation. However, the coaching staff put full trust into Bass this offseason as they didn't bring in any serious competition for him. Now, he is playing at a high level and he has the chance to set a new Bills record against the Ravens in Week 8.

Week 8 could feature a new Bills record set by Tyler Bass

Bass has gone 13/13 on field goal tries this season, but going back to his performance in 2024 he had made 5 field goals to end that season so he's up to 18 consecutive converted field goals. According to the Buffalo Bills' PR team, if Bass can make his first field goal attempt against the Ravens (if given the chance to do so), he will set a new franchise record at 19 consecutive made field goals.

It's been a solid season for Bass and it's great to see him having success. He has gone 4/4 from 20-29 yards, as well as 30-39 yards out. He has also gone 5/5 from 40-49 yards out. However, it's important to note that he hasn't kicked a field goal from 50+ yards out.

It would be no surprise to see the Bills and Ravens come down to the wire where the game could easily be placed on Bass' shoulders to win it for Buffalo. If that is the case, he will have another chance to win it for Buffalo just like he did in Week 5 against the Rams, and then he also made it a two-score game against the Raiders late in the 4th quarter in Week 6.
