When the NFL Draft came to a conclusion, the Buffalo Bills finished much stronger than fans may have anticipated. Going into the draft, the Bills only had seven picks and it didn’t include a second round pick. General manager Brandon Beane took that situation, made a good amount of trades to acquire extra picks, and ended up bringing ten new players to Buffalo.
They addressed many needs on both sides of the ball, found players who can play immediately, as well as players who will have the chance to develop over time.
Defense was a huge focus for the Bills going into this draft, now that they are switching to a 3-4 base defense under Jim Leonhard. However, wide receiver could not be ignored.
Leading up to the draft, there were many mock drafts that had the Bills going wide receiver in the first round. While it wouldn’t have been the worst idea in the world, Beane would have had to make sure it was the right prospect and he would have taken the risk of losing out on a ton of talent since they wouldn’t have picked until No. 91.
The first notable wide receiver that went off the board that was constantly being mocked to the Bills was KC Concepcion, who ended up going No. 24 to the Cleveland Browns. One receiver that the Bills could have drafted was Washington wide receiver, Denzel Boston. However, Buffalo not drafting Boston was their best decision that they did in the draft.
Bills passing up on WR Denzel Boston was right choice
This is not to say that Boston wouldn’t have provided some value for the Bills, but spending a first round pick with similar physical traits as Keon Coleman would have made no sense. Not to mention, Brandon Beane told the media earlier this week that they have hit “the reset button” with Coleman and are hoping that he will have a big 2026 season.
With Buffalo having other big needs across the roster, if they were to take someone like Boston despite having Coleman and also having massive needs on the defense, it would have put the Bills in a very tough spot to make an impact the way they did. The Bills traded down a bunch of times which helped them gain more picks to add more talent.
Boston landed with the Cleveland Browns, where he will now join a wide receiver room that has KC Concepcion and Jerry Jeudy. The Bills decided to wait until the 4th round to draft a wide receiver in Skyler Bell, who has the chance to be one of the biggest steals from this draft class.
