We are just over 24 hours away from the Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans taking the field to battle each other to start their 2026 seasons. Buffalo is entering a new-era, while Houston enters a crucial season with C.J. Stroud, who has not been his rookie-self when he dominated in his first season.
Both of these teams are contenders, but they each have their own obstacles that they will need to overcome. One thing we do know is that the Texans have had the Bills' number in recent memory. With Joe Brady now taking over, Bills fans are hoping that he will get the Bills off to a great start in his head coaching debut.
As fans get ready for kickoff tomorrow, we had the chance to speak with Clayton Anderson, Site Expert for Toro Times (covering the Texans), and Anderson was able to provide some valuable insights that Bills fans don't want to miss out on.
Bills vs. Texans insights ahead of Week 1 matchup
1.) It's been 20 years since the Bills last beat the Texans in Houston. Do you sense there being any concern amongst Texans fans going into this matchup?
"It's been that long? Wow, I was only 13 at that point. But to the question, no, I wouldn't necessarily say there's "concern" per say within the Texans' fan base concerning the matchup. If anything, one could argue that there isn't the appropriate level of respect given to Josh Allen and his squad at a time where they're fully aware of the level of domination that Houston operated with within that time frame."
"For me personally, I'm just as concerned about the Bills being "due" for a win in this scenario just as much as I'm confident that the Texans can comfortably walk away from this with a 1-0 record."
2.) Do you believe the Texans will let C.J. Stroud sling the ball more, or do you think fans will see a ground-and-pound game with David Montgomery/Woody Marks?
"This roster has been re-made in the offseason in order to become more run-centric, so ground-and-pound should be the expected outcome for fans. Houston brought in a litany of brand new offensive linemen, traded for David Montgomery and drafting and/or signed multiple blocking tight ends to assist with protections at the line of scrimmage."
"As a result, C.J. Stroud's passing attempts might be limited to 20-25 per game by design, which should be great for those who understand that proper balance and situational awareness wins football games."
3.) The defense for Houston is elite and it's non-debatable. Outside of the big names like Derek Stingly, Will Anderson Jr., and Danielle Hunter, who on the defense is being overlooked by fans?
"Overlooked is pretty tough, because it seems like each and every layer of the defensive unit has made several game-altering plays throughout multiple seasons in the DeMeco Ryans era."
"But if I had to choose, I would say that fans should be on the lookout for the rookies this time around. Depth defenders (at the moment) like DT Kayden McDonald, LB Wade Woodaz and S Kamari Ramsey look like they're capable of creating some havoc in the midst of the big dogs wrecking shop. Each made impact plays in the preseason, so we've already seen some level of quality production at the NFL level from all three."
4.) Most Bills/Texans games come within a one-score game. Do you think we could see that again, or are you expecting more of a lopsided game?
"In years past, injuries have played a key role in who even made the field in these contests. Last season, Houston was without the likes of running back Joe Mixon, wide receiver Tank Dell and quarterback C.J. Stroud. The Bills were without players like tight end Dalton Kincaid and wide receiver Keon Coleman. In 2024, Houston lost Pro Bowl WR Nico Collins to a pulled hamstring right after a 67-yard touchdown strike from Stroud in the first quarter."
"This time around, Houston will be without Dell and wide receiver Jayden Higgins (torn ACL) to start, but they'll also enter with newly acquired Kayshon Boutte to step in to help. The Bills seem as healthy as they're going to be for a week one game. All that to say this, that this game is best setup to feature one team finally winning by a more comfortable margin. Let's say 7-10 points this time (which is a lot for these two)."
