When the Buffalo Bills had acquired wide receiver Stefon Diggs in 2020 from the Minnesota Vikings, it would start the Bills’ dominance of the AFC East up to this point. The Bills needed a true number one wideout for ascending quarterback Josh Allen and the pickup of Diggs was the perfect pickup.
He ultimately became a four-time Pro Bowler and had 1,000+ receiving yards in every season with the Bills. He and Josh Allen quickly became one of the league’s best QB-WR combo and helped build a winning culture in Buffalo. However, all good things must come to an end and the tension started to rise at the end of the 2022 season.
The first public image that showed tension between Allen and Diggs took place after Buffalo’s crushing loss against the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2023 divisional round. The whole team played poorly and it was capped off with Diggs flaring his arms up towards Allen, who was sitting on the bench and it look like Diggs was yelling at him.
Then before the 2023 season, there was more reported drama involving Diggs and the Bills heading into training camp, specifically at mandatory minicamp where Diggs did not show up and head coach Sean McDermott said he “was very concerned” about Diggs not being with the team. Eventually, Diggs would return.
After the 2023 season, which included Diggs dropping a crucial 4th-down catch in the 4th quarter in the AFC divisional round against the Chiefs, the Bills pulled off a move that kind of came unexpectedly. They traded Diggs to the Houston Texans along with a couple of draft picks. In return, the Bills received a 2025 2nd-round pick.
The Bills decided to take on a $31 million dead money charge with the trade, which should tell you exactly how bad the situation with Diggs must have been. Diggs would play just eight games with the Texans before tearing his ACL, ending his 2024 season early than anticipated. He finished the year with 496 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Bills fans should not overthink Stefon Diggs' latest social media move
News started to come up that Diggs had recently put up photos of his days back when he was with the Bills on his Instagram account. Those photos had been taken down before so seeing them back on his account is quite interesting, considering the fact that Diggs still remains a free agent.
Depending on who you talk to, there are mixed emotions about Diggs’ tenure in Buffalo. While it started out fantastic and nearly perfect, it ended badly and it created a lot of tension before the trade with Houston went down.
Again, there’s a reason why the Bills decided to take on a huge dead cap hit when they traded Diggs away. It seems like that both parties were just done with each other and the bandaid needed to be ripped off.
Losing Diggs looked like a move that would set back the Bills. Instead, it led to the “everybody eats” mentality on offense and it helped Josh Allen win his first MVP award of his career. Fans shouldn’t look too much into this because unless there is a complete change for the better with the overall feelings between Diggs and the Bills, it is very hard to see a reunion.
