For the first time in nine seasons, Sean McDermott currently is not a head coach after he was fired by the Buffalo Bills two days after their divisional round loss last season to the Denver Broncos. There’s no doubt that McDermott is one of the best head coaches that the Bills ever had, but too many heartbreaking losses in the playoffs played a big role into why the Bills moved on from him.
There were mixed emotions amongst the fanbase, as some fans believed that Brandon Beane and the way the roster was constructed was the main problem, not the coaching aspect of things.
While Beane certainly hasn’t put together the greatest roster for the Bills, Buffalo’s defense had always been the issue under McDermott, despite him being a defensive-minded coach. It’s one thing to have constant bad luck, but it’s another to have the side of the ball that is the speciality of the head coach to constantly be the reason why the team loses.
While Joe Brady will now be running the show in Buffalo as the new head coach, McDermott is currently sitting out but could very well be a potential head coach next year. New head coaches are hired every year and with the success that McDermott had with the Bills, he should very well be coaching again in 2027 if not sooner.
Sean McDermott seen at NFC East's minicamp (but it shouldn't mean anything)
According to Dan Duggan from The Athletic, covering the New York Giants, McDermott was “taking in today’s Giants minicamp practice with Joe Schoen and John Mara.”

There have been a bunch of ties between the Bills and the Giants for years now. Brian Daboll and Joe Schoen went to the Giants after being with the Bills for a couple of seasons in the late 2010s/early 2020s. Players from both teams have switched teams between each other. There has been a good amount of connections between the two organizations.
Seeing McDermott at minicamp, specifically with Schoen and Mara isn’t a surprise because McDermott and Schoen worked together in Buffalo at one point. However, this appearance shouldn’t mean anything significant.
The Giants just hired John Harbaugh as their next head coach and unless there is an ultimate collapse under him, Harbaugh isn’t going anywhere. In addition, I don’t see McDermott taking a coordinator position next year either. It should be either head coach or nothing at all.
This could very well be McDermott just staying involved within the league and keeping his name out there for the rest of the NFL. He plans on coaching again, it’s just a matter of when and not if. However, it should certainly not be with the Giants.
