Sean McDermott has chance to make history vs. NY Jets on MNF
By Brandon Ray
Most Bills fans have had some harsh feelings about Sean McDermott the last two games. After the Bills made a comeback being down 20-3 last week against the Houston Texans, the Bills had the chance to take the Texans to overtime but McDermott approved a questionable drive that led to three straight incomplete passes to stop the clock and give the ball back to Houston, who eventually beat the Bills on a walkoff field goal.
McDermott has been criticized for his lack of aggressiveness and horrific game management. Some fans and analysts are even saying that he is wasting Josh Allen’s talent with his game management. It’s a fair argument.
At the same time, no one can discredit the work that McDermott has done since arriving in Buffalo in 2017. Under his leadership, the Bills have only missed the playoffs one time and have won the AFC East the last four seasons. Not to mention, he has shown that he can get the most out of players when injuries happen.
He has a 76-43 record in the regular season, but where he has been doubted is his playoff performance, having a 5-6 record which includes the infamous “13 seconds” game against the Kansas City Chiefs back in 2022.
There are mixed emotions about McDermott, but the one thing that Bills fans have to admit is that he is the best coach the Bills have had since Marv Levy.
McDermott will have the chance to correct mistakes this week against the New York Jets and if he and his staff can game plan correctly, the Bills should keep control of the AFC East. If McDermott can lead his team to a win on the road, he will join history for the right reason.
Sean McDermott has chance to join short history list
If the Bills defeat the Jets on Monday Night Football, McDermott will get his 10th win over the Jets in his career. As it stands, only eight NFL coaches have 10+ wins over the Jets in the history of the NFL, per the Buffalo Bills PR X account.
It seems like whenever the Bills face off against the Jets, it turns into a closer battle than it should. At the same time, the Jets are built to beat the Bills. Especially with the Jets firing Robert Saleh this past week, new interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich will be looking to make a statement on primetime.
